Sizing Up the Bed: Why Cross-Lay Dimensions Matter When Spec’ing Your Rig

When designing and building a new fire apparatus, success on the fireground often comes down to the finer details. One critical specification that is frequently overlooked is the space required for the cross-lay hose bed.

All too often, a department takes delivery of a brand-new rig only to discover that their preferred hose does not fit appropriately in the cross-lay space. When hose beds are improperly sized, stretching handlines becomes difficult, deployment gets snagged, or the apparatus simply cannot accommodate the desired length of hose.

To prevent these operational headaches, we physically measured the cross-lay space required for the most popular 1.75" Key Hose models under various loading configurations.
