Key TRU‑ID Hose

Experience

After seeing the fire conditions in which the Key TRU‑ID hose was subjected to, knowing that we never lost positive water to our nozzle, gives me humble reassurance that we made the correct choice when replacing our hose lines.

On Saturday, March 2nd 2019, area Firefighters conducted live fire training in a two story, single family dwelling in the area. Given we had just received our first shipment of Key TRU‑ID 1.75" hose, we were anxious to put it to good use.

As the day moved forward with another evolution, crews built a fire set in the corner of the living room on the Charlie/Delta corner of Division 1. There were man doors in the Kitchen on the Charlie/Bravo corner as well as the front door on the Alpha side where we had a protection line staged. The protection line consisted of 300' of 1.75" TRU‑ID hose. The ignition team ignited the set and backed down the hallway to a living room on the Alpha/Bravo corner where they pulled the protection in with them as a precaution. It was the intent that fire progression would travel towards the open door in the kitchen on the Charlie/Bravo corner of the house. As the crews were arriving and stretching lines for fire suppression, fire conditions in the building changed drastically from what is believed to be a moderate change in the wind speed. Essentially the wind now pushed heavy fire conditions rapidly down the hallway towards the front door on the Alpha side. Given this dramatic change in conditions, the ignition crew had closed the door to the living room as much as possible (unable to the fully close due to hose line entering the room for protection) in effort to seclude themselves. The ignition crew continuously flowed water around the door way to ensure the room stayed cool. The first arriving Engine for the scenario advanced their line past the living room suppressing the fire at which point the ignition crew exited behind the to observe conditions and/or coordinate suppression efforts. As the scenario concluded, it was noted as shown in the picture above that the hose had sustained significant damage although never catastrophically failing.

After seeing the fire conditions in which the Key TRU‑ID hose was subjected to, knowing that we never lost positive water to our nozzle, gives me humble reassurance that we made the correct choice when replacing our hose lines.
